Your guide collects you from Arusha after breakfast and drives you south to Tarangire, whose dry-season grasslands around the Tarangire River gather some of the biggest elephant herds in Tanzania. Between the ancient baobabs you will search for lion, leopard, buffalo, zebra, wildebeest and an extraordinary bird list through the open roof of your private 4x4.
A picnic lunch by the river offers a front-row seat as thirsty animals come to drink, followed by another sweep of afternoon game viewing. When the light fades you transfer to a carefully selected lodge for dinner and a comfortable overnight.
An early start takes you to the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the largest intact volcanic caldera on Earth. Descending its steep inner wall you enter a contained Eden of grassland, forest and soda pools crowded with elephant, buffalo, zebra, hippo and the famous black-maned lions that laze across the open floor.
Midday finds you picnicking beside one of the crater's lakes while flamingos wade in the shallows; afterward you keep scanning for the elusive black rhino before your guide drives you back to Arusha or Kilimanjaro International Airport for departure.
The parks of northern Tanzania sit close enough to be linked in a single weekend, and this map shows plainly how the pieces fit together. Tarangire's baobab plains and the green rim of the Ngorongoro Crater appear with the roads and towns that join them, so the whole two day route is easy to picture before you leave Arusha. Keep it handy in the vehicle and every game drive, picnic stop and overnight makes immediate sense.
