The Serengeti: Tanzania's Crown Jewel of Safari Country

Sweeping across the northern reaches of Tanzania, the Serengeti is the country's most celebrated safari stage, a rolling ocean of golden grassland teeming with life. Wrapping around over 14,750 square kilometres of wilderness, this UNESCO World Heritage Site stages one of Africa's greatest natural dramas, played out daily against drifting acacia and endless horizon.

From short-grass plains and riverine forests to rocky kopjes and rolling hills, the park shelters more than 70 large mammal species alongside over 500 recorded birds. Lions rule the open country in famously big prides, cheetahs stretch out across the pasture, and leopards doze in the shade of fig trees - all part of an ecosystem that feels ancient and alive.

Chasing the Great Migration Across the Serengeti

The name Serengeti comes from the Maasai word for 'endless plains', and it is here that the Great Migration unfolds each year as over two million wildebeest, joined by zebras and gazelles, circle the ecosystem in search of fresh grazing. The herds surge through crocodile-infested rivers and scatter at the approach of predators, turning the savannah into a living theatre of survival.

Maasai Culture and Conservation in the Serengeti

The Serengeti is also a landscape shaped by people. The Maasai have grazed these grasslands for generations, and their traditions remain woven into the rhythm of the park. Understanding their customs, and the conservation partnerships that protect this exceptional ecosystem, adds a human thread to every safari.

Stand on a kopje at sunrise, watch a crossing in full flood, or look up at a sky crowded with stars, and the Serengeti leaves a lasting impression. It is the journey every safari dream is measured against.
